Of course, buying gifts for one another is traditional and allows you to show that special someone that you care by picking something you know they particularly enjoy. Most men will be more than happy to receive a bottle of their favourite
wine or
spirits, or even some of their preferred
beer. Ladies can be trickier to buy for, but a box of
chocolates or some tasteful toiletries are rarely unpopular. If there’s something else you have your eye on, you can give hints or mention it before the day to help your partner out. Remember that a great gift can be something that has a shared meaning for the two of you – the chocolates you had on your first date, or maybe a type of food that reminds you of a holiday you took together.
Presents certainly aren’t the only way to make the day a memorable one, though. This year, Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday, which means that you and your loved one can put aside relaxed time to spend together over the weekend.
Breakfast in bed can be a great start to the day – whether it’s
eggs and
bacon or
toast and
tea, it’ll help you both to start the day on the right note. If you’re able to spend the day together, then work out beforehand what you’d most like to do, whether it’s relaxing at home or going on a day trip. In the evening, set time aside for a romantic meal for two.
Champagne and
strawberries can help set the mood, as can gentle lighting from
scented candles and a table full of anything else you both especially enjoy.
This year Valentine’s Day happens to fall at the same time as Chinese New Year, so if you’re stuck for ideas about what to make, you can always base it around a Chinese theme.
