Taste worth waiting for Perfectionists that we are, we put a lot of time into developing our blends - but the time we spent thinking about our Decaf really took the biscuit. That's because we simply refused to compromise on taste. Tea is delicate, so it can really lose its flavour when it's decaffeinated. But it didn't seem fair that cutting down on caffeine meant missing out on a proper brew. So, after a lot of thought, we decided to do something about it. Luckily for us, Ian, our Head of Tea, loves a challenge. Working closely with our suppliers, Ian and his team tasted literally thousands of different teas to find ones that didn't lose their flavour during decaffeination. In fact, over a year of trial and error went by before they hit upon exactly the right combination of top quality East African teas. The result is a satisfying decaf that gives you all the colour and flavour you'd expect from Yorkshire tea. We hope you'll agree it was worth the wait!

Bringing you a proper brew. We go to great lengths to make tea properly - from tasting 1000s of teas a day to find the best for our blend, to thinking about the water you'll brew it with at home. And over the years, we've built relationships with some of the world's top tea estates and gardens, visiting them in person as much as possible. But working closely with our suppliers is about more than quality tea. It's about trading with a conscience, doing business in a way that respects people and planet.

Meet our recycling pirate No, we're not making it up. We really do have a recycling pirate. His name's Captain Rummage. (Although his friends know him as Chris.) Actually, he's our 'award-winning' recycling pirate. Just over a year ago, Prince Charles presented him with an MBE in recognition of the work he does 'turning trash into treasure'. It began when some of our neighbours borrowed leftover cardboard cones from our factory to make into 'Christmas angels' raising money for charity by selling them through local shops. Since then we've found many more ways to recycle things we once threw away, making lots more friends along the way. And when Chris started visiting local schools he created Captain Rummage to capture their imagination. But why a pirate? Well, it could be about hunting for treasure in the trash or maybe it's his 'reduce, reuse and recycle' motto - also known as the three 'arrrs'!

Gorgeous grey - organic whole leaf earl grey tea with a hint of lavender
After falling in love with exquisite taste of this whole leaf tea from Dunsandle, one of India's highest tea plantations, we married it with aromatic bergamot oil, sweet lemon and a caress of lavender to create our Gorgeous Grey. As a fairly traded tea, it gives back to the tea pickers of Dunsandle. As an organic tea, it gives back to Mother Nature. For us, it's a taste of all that's beautiful in the world. I hope you like it. Sebastian Pole Pukka's Herbal Tea Creator

At Sainsbury's we care passionately about the sourcing and blending of our teas. It all started when our founder John James Sainsbury, selected and blended teas for his fledgling family business on Stamford Street, back in 1903. Through developing our relationships with our master blenders, who taste hundreds of teas every week we ensure your cup of tea is the same quality that you have always enjoyed. We work closely with our tea producers, including those in Kenya, India and Sri Lanka; they receive the benefits of Fairtrade, whilst you still enjoy the same great tasting, high quality tea. We still use the traditional method of taste testing to get the golden colour, medium strength and smooth full flavour just right, so you always get a great cup of tea.

Still blended and packed with pride in the UK from imported ingredients.
Box - Card - widely recycled. Strong and traditional
1706 Strong Breakfast teabags Strong by name, strong by nature, this lively blend is full of flavour and packs a punch. It's the perfect antidote to the alarm clock and early mornings. It's one of our long standing favourites, so much so we drink it for a little extra punch throughout the day.
A firm favourite amongst our master blenders, this flagship blend shows the artistry of blending at its best. A detailed knowledge of the climate, location and altitude across select tea gardens in Sri Lanka, Assam and Kenya ensure that we choose exactly the right week to pick the best quality teas. The magic begins when teas are then expertly blended together to give our much loved 1706 Strong Breakfast.
The journey from tea garden to your cup... When it comes to tea we're a little different from everybody else. The way we buy and blend is unique; we choose from more origins than anyone else and have a master blender dedicated to each of these locations. What they don't know about their tea gardens and where to find the best quality, isn't worth knowing. It is said that 7 is a lucky number, for us it's the number of times the master blenders taste each batch to make sure that the quality from its exotic origin reaches your cup.

TEA, TWININGS & INSPIRATION. For us, tea is more than just a drink. It's a way to calm down, to wake up, to spark an idea, to share a story. Our own story started in 1706. That's when Thomas Twining first set up shop. In the age of coffee shops, he was the man who loved tea and worked hard to bring it to the people. More than 300 years later, the passion's still there. Each tea - and we have more than 115 - is a special blend. They are tasted and tasted by our experts until they are just right. And we still sell tea from Thomas's little shop on London's Strand, so pop in for a visit. We'd love to see you there.
TIME TO TALK ABOUT TEA? We'd love to answer anything you need to know about tea. You can ring the UK tealine 0845 6019612 (charged at a local rate in the UK) Monday to Friday, 8 till 6. Or you can visit our website www.twinings.co.uk
THE STORY GOES THAT... Earl Grey (who became Prime Minister a long way back) was given cases of this tea by a grateful Chinese Mandarin. He took a sip, drained the cup and was ready for whatever came next. We should be grateful too as Earl Grey passed the tea on to Twinings to blend for his family. Several Earls have come and gone but this tea is as delicious as ever. The aroma of bergamot is as distinctive as a visit from the Emperor of China.

Assam is a strong tea grown from our strong relationship with the North Eastern state of Assam, which dates back to when tea was first planted out by the Victorian pioneers. We still buy from the same high quality gardens, on the flood plains of the Great Brahmaputra. Only peak season teas are chosen to give the highest quality Assam tea.

And although elephants aren't known for their tea drinking, in the tea-growing region of Assam they help out by doing a lot of the heavy lifting and carrying. Ceylon, also known as The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, has a changeable varied climate; it can be brilliant sunshine on one side of the island but monsoons on the other. We buy more Ceylon tea than anyone else in the UK and have been sourcing this tea for over 3 centuries, giving us an in depth understanding of these growing seasons and their movement from east to west and back again. With this knowledge, we choose the highest quality handpicked tea at just the right time for a superb light, delicate tea.

Way back, when Sri Lanka was still called Ceylon... The island's economy was in crisis. Nothing to do with tea, but with the sudden failure of the coffee crop. A good idea was needed, and the idea was tea. The hot, tropical climate gave the tea a bright amber colour and a flavour that refreshes with every sip. The tea plantations thrived, coffee was forgotten, but the name for the tea will always be remembered. Ceylon.

Our English Breakfast master blender searches relentlessly for the best teas from Assam, Ceylon and Kenya to give a perfectly balanced blend. We don't stop at just one tea from each origin, as each specially chosen tea garden adds a defining taste and quality to the end blend. Every cup you drink contains tea from 15 different tea gardens. The master blender has a busy task, the large number of tea gardens and seasonal fluctuations mean for every batch they juggle the levels of each tea in the recipe to give a consistently first class cup of tea.

It's an amazing journey... Down through the Himalayas from Darjeeling on what looks like an antique toy train. Carrying its special cargo of tea, the tiny steam train winds its way around hills, through valleys. The tea is special because the growing conditions at high altitude give it a delicate and fresh taste and a shimmering gold colour. We love to drink it when there's an occasion - but we think tea drinking's an occasion anyway.

It was too long to wait between lunch and dinner... For Anna Maria, Duchess of Bedford back in the 1840s. She got so peckish one afternoon that she decided some toast and jam, served with a pot of tea would be a good idea. The trend caught on, and pretty soon afternoon tea had become an important part of the British day. Our Traditional Afternoon tea goes perfectly with sandwiches or cake, and is just right for when you need a little afternoon boost.
